Definitions of Information Design

Information Design is the art and science of communication. It encompasses the many ways that communication can be encoded, transmitted, decoded, and assimilated. It is often associated with current technologies, however, the underlying principles existed prior to these recent tools. Information Design began with humanity's first attempts to organization any kind of communication system. It is most often associated with visual thinking and communication that involves imagery.

Many others have defined Information Design also. Below are a few of those definitions:

  • Information Design is the defining, planning, and shaping of the contents of a message and the environments it is presented in with the intention of achieving particular objectives in relation to the needs of users.

    - International Institute of Information Design

  • Information Design is a field and approach to designing clear, understandable communications by giving care to structure, context, and presentation of data and information. As a field, its principles relate to all communications products and experiences, regardless of medium (print, broadcast, digital, online, etc.). Information Design is, primarily, concerned with clarity (instead of simplicity) and understanding.

    - Nathan Shedroff

  • Information Design is the design of visual displays of data. In computer science and information technology, information design is sometimes a rough synonym for (but is not necessarily the same discipline as) information architecture, the design of information systems, databases, or data structures. This sense includes data modelling and process analysis.
